Description of the Project “Survey on Social Development Trends?/p>

1. Introduction
With rapid change of social and economic situations, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), Taiwan (ROC) initiated “Social Development Trends Survey?starting 1998 to gather the basic information on social development and people’s lives and in turn to thoroughly investigate core social issues. The goal is to grasp the trend of social development from a regular, systematic survey, which is comprised of four subjects: family life, social participation, time use, and health and safety. Each subject will be investigated every four years alternately.

2. Groups surveyed
(1) Social Participation: people of ROC nationals living in Taiwan over the age of 20
(2) Family Life, Time Use, and Health and Safety: people of ROC nationals living in Taiwan over the age of 15

3. Survey content
(1) Family Life: family members, relatives, everyday life, marriage situation, and parent-children relationship.
(2) Social Participation: interaction and trust in neighborhood (community), participation within social groups and activities, volunteer work, and donations.
(3) Time Use: time allocation and time cognition
(4) Health and Safety: mental and physical health, life style, sleeping quality, medical treatment, personal safety, and accident

4. Survey period: each theme is surveyed every four years alternately
(1) Family Life: 1998 and 2002
(2) Social Participation: 1999 and 2003
(3) Time Use: 2000 and 2004
(4) Health and Safety: 2001 and 2005

5. Sampling design and estimation
(1) Sampling population: those whose households are registered in Taiwan area.
(2) Sample number: approximately 40,000 people in 13,000 households.
(3) Sampling method: the 2-stage stratified sampling is adopted; the sampling unit of the first stage is the village or neighborhood and that of the second stage is the household.
(4) Matrix estimation: the sample participants is estimated by ratio estimation.
